Faith: My Experience of Understanding God

“The best teachings comes from learning. Thank God.” – TL

If you know me, I am not a religious person by any means — nor do I force religion or God on anyone. Frank Ocean once said “You gotta believe in something” — in one of my favorite songs titled ‘We All Try‘. In this song, he lists things that he believes in:

“I believe Jehovah-jireh

I believe there’s heaven, I believe in war
I believe a woman’s temple
Gives her the right to choose but baby, don’t abort.

I believe that marriage
Isn’t between a man and woman but between love and love
And I believe you when you say
That you’ve lost all faith

But you must believe in something
Something, something…”
I then began to question and ask myself “Sakiyna, what is it that you believe in”? There was a point in my life where I began going through many phases and decided to teach myself about different religions. Christianity. Islam. Judaism. Hinduism. I grew up in a household where my mom is a die-hard Christian and my dad — he studied different religions, not necessarily belonging to one. This made me question what religion in the world was the right one.
I came to the point of my life where I recognized that God (the Creator) is the source of my life and no one can convince me otherwise!

I came to the point of my life where I recognized that God (the Creator) is the source of my life and no one can convince me otherwise — but I did it at my own pace, following my OWN time.  I didn’t want to hear my family  members nor my Christian friend’s opinions, so I needed to take this road by myself. It took some life challenges to happen for me to realize, but life challenges are my best lessons. Being a Taurus (very stubborn and once my mind is made up — it’s nearly impossible to change it), I wanted to share some sources with those that are struggling with understanding who God is. Or maybe you were forced into a religion growing up and have so many unanswered questions.

I had so many opinions on what I “needed” to do/think but honestly,  I just I had to understand who this God is on my own — and figure if this God was worth getting to know. And… I must say: it was a 5+ year process, and is still well worth it.

So, what started your faith? These resources literally changed my life. You have to also do the work!
  1. A movie on Netflix A Case For Christ (watch trailer) (also a New York Best Selling book). This film/book is about an atheist, Lee Strobel turned Christian. As newspaper journalist, Lee’s job was to “PROVE if stories were true or false”. A serious incident occurred with his young daughter which caused Lee’s wife to attend church and begin to believe in God — believing that God saved their daughters life. In this film/book, Lee had even threatened to divorce his wife if she didn’t stop talking/believing in God and attending church. Without his wife’s knowledge, Lee began to travel the world to speak to archaeologists, professors, journalists, doctorates for an entire year to prove that Christ isn’t real. Lee could always prove his point in regards to any story he wrote for the newspaper —  but the thing Lee could not prove was that God didn’t exist. MUST WATCH. A friend also invited me to her church service, which he spoke at, and that night changed my life.
Whether you are going through; doubt, temptation, fears, jealousy, depression, forgiveness issues, anger or simply just want to understand the bible, this app is amazing!
  1. The Bible App. A good friend of mine recently informed me about devotions that are planned on The Bible App. EVERY morning I begin my day studying a topic — depending on what I need most in my life. With the Bible App any clarity that I needed, this app gave.  I was blown away. Whether you are going through; doubt, temptation, fears, jealousy, depression, forgiveness issues, anger or simply just want to understand the bible, this app is amazing! 2. Transformation Church. Don’t you love a Pastor that can just keep it real and lets you know that you need to get your life together? Unfortunately, this church is located in Oklahoma, but I never enjoyed listening to sermons so much. Pastor Mike Todd is definitely a Pastor that the millennials (and generation Z) needs. There is a series Titled “Relationship Goals” that everyone needs to watch. This video has over 5 million views. So powerful.
  3. Lastly, life situations. If we all reflect on things that we have gone through, the outcome could have always been worse. What I use to view as a coincidence, was more than that. Once I TRULY believed and began to build a relationship with this powerful source, my life completely changed, as well as my viewpoints.
